Disenfranchising minorities
The US Commission on Civil Rights reports that African Americans lose their right to vote after they serve felony prison sentences. There are signficant racial disparities because there are racial disparities in arrest, prosecution, conviction and sentencing. As a result: Of those disenfranchised, 1.4 million are African American men—a figure that represents 13 percent of the black adult male population, and is seven times the national average. If the current trend in incarceration continues, three in 10 of the next generation of black men can expect to be disenfranchised in their lifetime.
