Printmedia
The printmedia department seeks to broaden the definition of printmedia
without forsaking traditional methods. Covering a wide variety of techniques
— from fifteenth-century technology to contemporary methods —
the department maintains facilities for processes ranging from etching,
screenprinting, lithography, and relief printing to offset productions
and other photo-mechanical processes.
The department’s faculty members are versed in all printmedia techniques
as well as in at least one discipline outside of printmedia — including
painting, design, digital, video, installation, photography, and writing.
The talents and skills of the faculty have won them numerous grants and
awards, including seven Illinois Arts Council Grants, five National Endowment
for the Arts awards, and one Fulbright Fellowship.
Like the faculty, graduate students in Printmedia work across disciplines,
creating books, collages, sculpture, and installations in addition to
a variety of approaches to print media. The range of interests is as diverse
as the available methods of execution. Students have numerous resources
at their disposal, including the Glore Print Study Room in the Department
of Prints and Drawings in the Art Institute Museum, and the Joan Flasch
Artists' Book Collection in the John M. Flaxman Library at the School.
Equipment and facilities include:
Four etching relief presses; seven stone lithographic presses; one offset
proof press; two offset presses; process camera; photomechanical darkroom;
bookbinding equipment; individual studios; Macintosh computer lab with
10 stations and assorted peripherals.
