3000 Level Undergraduate Division Course
Descriptions
UGDIV 3003
The Visible Side: Operating The Student Union Galleries
This course will teach students about the process of curating and operating
the Student Union gallery spaces. Through this process, students will
serve as active participants in developing an exhibition concept, writing
a proposal, researching artists/artwork, and developing and executing
promotional materials through lectures and hands-on experience. The
course will include exhibitions curated, installed, and promoted by
students in the class. Students will visit profit and not-for-profit
galleries in Chicago to observe curatorial, exhibition, installation,
and promotional approaches. In addition, visiting curators, gallery
founders, and owners will be brought to the class to share their experiences
with students. Each student will be required to develop an exhibition
concept (alone or with a partner); research the concept and write a
formal proposal (including drawings of installation plans); and actively
participate in the installation of student exhibitions during the eight-week
course period.

Experimental Television: SAIC TV
Experimental Television: SAIC TV is a seminar combining the
history of commercial and alternative television with hands-on production
experience. Through readings and screenings, the class will examine
the evolution of broadcast, cable, public and community access TV. We’ll
look at the viability of these media as venues and distribution sites
for artists, independent video makers, and activists. Students will
also work together to produce original programming based on a theme
selected each semester. This program will be aired on SAIC TV (the School’s
student-run station) and distributed nationally to college and cable
access TV stations. In addition to some basic video production and editing,
students will learn all aspects of multi-camera TV studio production.
Previous video experience is preferred, but not required.

what is the relationship between art, technology and practical publication
demands, what can be done now, and what lies down the road.
