So, You Want to Start an Arts Organization?
This is an Arts Administration class for beginners. The aim of this
course is to offer students who are not already familiar with arts management
a general overview of the field as well as an opportunity to learn a
specific set of skills. Through a combination of case studies, guest
lecturers, and hands-on exercises students will learn the basics of
organizational and financial management, grant writing, marketing, public
relations, and tax implications, as well as how to design a strategic
plan and author a successful mission statement. Other topics will include
a discussion of leasing space vs. buying a space. Note that while the
primary focus of the course is on not-for-profit organizations, some
focus will also be directed at entrepreneurial enterprises, such as
art galleries, and starting up a small business.
