PRINT 3001
Offset Productions

This course introduces students to the production of small edition books and multiples, using the School’s high-speed presses and commercial lithographic processes. Students learn darkroom techniques and use the department’s computers to prepare their work for printing. Distribution of artists’ multiples and alternative exhibition opportunities are discussed.


PRINT 3002
Intermediate and Advanced Etching

This presentation of intaglio techniques emphasizes a variety of multi-plate color printing processes. The course concentrates on individual development through the intaglio process. Prerequisite: PRINT 2002.


PRINT 3003
Intermediate and Advanced Lithography

This course introduces students to aluminum plate lithography, both hand drawn and photographic. Direct laster “Pronto” plates are also used for digital images. Emphasis is placed on the development of an individual project. Prerequisite: PRINT 2003.


PRINT 3005
Contemporary Processes I

This course offers exploration in photo lithography. The stencil techniques used in this class include digitally generated, hand drawn, and a variety of photographic film techniques such as halftones, line work, and fine line. Emphasis is placed upon individual discovery of the possibilities for working with photographic, digital, and hand-made images in this medium. Prerequisite: PHOTO 1001.


PRINT 3006
Contemporary Processes II

This course offers exploration in photo screenprinting and photo etching. The stencil techniques used in this class include digitally generated, hand drawn, and a variety of photographic film techniques such as halftones, line work, and fine line. Emphasis is placed upon individual discovery of the possibilities for working with photographic, digital, and hand-made images in this medium. Prerequisite: PRINT 3005 or PHOTO 1001.

Artists’ Books

This is an intermediate/advanced level course for students seriously committed to producing sequentially developed ideas, and explores traditional and nontraditional book formats.


PRINT 3008
Intermediate/Advanced Screenprinting

Advanced exploration is encouraged in the screenprinting medium. Emphasis is placed on individual experimentation, development, and the refinement of technical skills. Processes offered include large format printing, 4-color separation, and other advanced traditional photographic and digital techniques. Prerequisite: PRINT 2005.


PRINT 3017
Monotypes in Oil- and Water-based Media

A course for students working at all levels of printmaking or painting that introduces a variety of monotyping techniques. Some of the media used in the course are oil-based, such as oil pigments and oil-based inks; and some are water-based, such as opaque and transparent watercolors, water soluble inks, and tempera paints. Registration and overprinting methods are demonstrated, along with stencil and transferring processes. Instruction consists of demonstrations and private and group critiques.


PRINT 3018
Advanced Artists’ Books

This course offers advanced exploration with visual and written material in paged sequence. Ideas are encouraged within a broad range of possibilities, via the format of the artist’ book. The development of a major project is encouraged. Prerequisite: PRINT 3007.


PRINT 3019
Command P: Digital Prints

This course addresses electronic imaging and output as a means of producing prints. Images will be generated on the computer using drawing, digital cameras, scanner and a variety of software. In addition, students will be shown collage, transfer and surface manipulation techniques. The similarities and differences between traditional and digital prints will be explored, as well as their relationship to contemporary trends in print. Pre-requisite: Any 2000 level Printmaking course.


PRINT 3020
Intermediate and Advanced Relief Printmaking

This class focuses on technical problem solving and self expression. Students learn techniques of printing on a larger scale, complex color in reduction and multiple-block printing, registration techniques, and how to choose a wood and paper for a specific idea. There are lectures and study of contemporary relief processes. Experimental expressive approaches are encouraged. Prerequisite: PRINT 2004.
