1000 Level English as a Second Language Course Descriptions


ESL 1007
English as a Second Language: Writing I

This is the first half of a two-semester-long foundation course for students who do not speak English as their first language. The primary focus of the course is the acquisition of English through writing a variety of brief papers including expressive, informative, persuasive, and critical evaluation. The course also promotes English language development through listening, speaking, and reading.


ESL 1008
English as a Second Language: Writing II

This is the second half of a two-semester foundation course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students continue to develop facility in English through listening, speaking, and reading, with emphasis on writing.


ESL 1009
English as a Second Language: Reading I

This is the first half of a two-semester foundation course for students who do not speak English as their first language. The primary focus of the course is on acquisition of English through reading novels, textbooks, and articles; however, the course also promotes English language development through listening, speaking, and writing.


ESL 1010
English as a Second Language: Reading II

This is the second half of the two-semester foundation course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students continue to develop facility in English through listening, speaking, and writing, with emphasis on reading.


ESL 1011
English Language Fluency: Writing I

This is the first half of an advanced two-semester course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students develop college level academic skills in writing. The course focuses on building competence and confidence in writing; students write essays, including a short research paper, and analyze writing by both students and professional writers. The course also provides extensive English development through listening, speaking, and reading.

English Language Fluency: Writing II

This is the second half of an advanced two-semester course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students continue to develop their proficiency in English language through listening, speaking, and reading, with the greatest emphasis on writing.


ESL 1013
English Language Fluency: Reading I

This is the first half of a two-semester advanced course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students read college level texts with greater skill and increased comprehension. In addition, students learn to paraphrase, summarize, and analyze these texts through writing. The course also provides extensive English development through listening and speaking.


ESL 1014
English Language Fluency: Reading II

This is the second half of a two-semester advanced course for students who do not speak English as their first language. Students continue to develop their proficiency in English language through listening, speaking, and writing, with the greatest emphasis on reading.
