5000 Level Graduate Division Course Descriptions
GRAD 5011
Time-Based Production Studio
This course is specifically designed to enable graduate students to
gain the necessary broad overview of technical options available for
the creation of time-based work. Emphasis will be placed on the full
and efficient use of the resources at the school. Computer-based technologies
will be surveyed as well as considerations inherent to production, presentation
and installation of projects.
Emphasis will be placed on enabling students to choose, access and integrate
appropriate media for their work.
GRAD 5020
Digital 3-D Modeling for Sculptural Practices: Techniques and Critiques
The course introduces graduate students to digital tools and computer
software programs designed for the development of three-dimensional
forms, spaces, objects, sites, and processes. Students learn 3-D computer
modeling basics through structured exercises and explore a range of
cultural issues through critical reading and discussion. Students will
explore, sample, and discuss the possibilities and implications of these
digital processes, and develop a critical basis for the evaluation of
their use. Various tools and methodologies will be introduced that allow
applications/outputs such as schematic drawings, flat patterns for fabrication,
virtual models and spaces, digital files for 3-D output such as computer
driven mechanisms, and rapid prototyping. The structured beginning is
followed by an open work period for the development of individual projects.
Typical software might include: Strata Studio Pro, FormZ, Maya, and
Drape.
