FIBER 4003
Woven Structure:
Independent Projects
This course is designed for students who have developed a strong personal
direction in the use of woven structures. A familiarity with problems
of color, technique, and composition is expected. Students work on problems
that are conceived independently within a class structure of critiques,
lectures, and group discussions. Prerequisite: Two semesters of FIBER
3002.
FIBER 4004
Computer Imaging for Fiber
This class, for graduate and undergraduate students with little or no
computer experience, solely addresses the computer and its application
to fiber. This course will explore digital imaging, painting, drawing,
and photo manipulation, and page layout through the use of Adobe Photoshop,
Fractal Painter, and QuarkXPress. Scanning, color inkjet printing, and
the use of commercial service bureaus will also be included. The knowledge
and skills gained in this course will culminate in projects involving
fiber processes and materials depending on the direction and interests
of individual students.
FIBER 4005
Advanced Fiber and Material Studies Studio
The primary purpose of this course is to provide a forum for in-depth
critiques and exploration of students individual directions within
the context of contemporary art. Both technical and conceptual input
will be given on a tutorial basis. Group discussions, readings, slide
and video presentations, field trips to current exhibitions, and visiting
lecturers may augment this class. Group critiques and individual consultations
are an integral part of this course. Professional practices will also
be covered, including: preparing an exhibition; sources and strategies
for grant and exhibition proposals; discussion of graduate programs;
documentation; developing a professional resume; and writing an artists
statement. Enrolled students will be given a project space. A maximum
of twelve students will be admitted per semester. The facilities of
the department will be available to these students to use including
the weaving, print, and mixed-media studios. Open to students at junior
level and above. The signature of the department chair or the instructor
required to register for this class.
