4000 Level Ceramics Course Descriptions

CER 4000
Independent Study

Undergraduate Projects gives the student the opportunity to explore a specific problem in the student’s area of concentration, carried out independently but with a faculty adviser. A schedule of conferences is usually established at the semester’s beginning. Instructor signature required for registration. Open to students at Junior level and above.

CER 4001
Ceramics Seminar

This course, offering studio credit, is often taught by visiting faculty, with course content determined by the instructor. Ceramic seminars in previous years have included ceramic history, discussions of contemporary issues, exhibits, and clay as used in architectural decoration. Prerequisite: CER 1000

CER 4040
Multiples

This advanced course in casting and mold-making expands the idea of tiles as multiples in modular systems, interlocking structures, large scale installations, walls, and enclosures. Students explore tile/multiple possibilities, decorative and sculptural, as well as touch upon specific aspects of architectural and structural components, including forming, durability, shrinkage justification, and installation techniques. Instructor’s consent must be obtained by students interested in the course. Prerequisite: CER 3040.

CER 4050
Advanced Ceramics

This course offers advanced students a forum for critiques and discussion of contemporary ceramic directions. Emphasis is placed on individual development through complex integration of technology and information. Field trips and artists’ studio tours provide a format for extensive dialogue. Prerequisite: one 2000 level and one 3000 level Ceramics course.
