6000 Level Art Therapy Course Descriptions
ARTTHER 6000
Art Therapy Fieldwork I
Group supervision for students involved in a variety of service settings.
This tutorial class complements the individual supervision students
receive at their field sites. Students spend twelve hours per week in
observation with increasing levels of direct participation with clients.
Basic clinical skills, counseling techniques, sensitivity to diverse
cultures, ethics, and standards of practice are emphasized in addition
to processing the emotional complexities of early professional development.
Completion of or concurrent enrollment in a 5000 level required Art
Therapy course is required for enrollment in this course.
ARTTHER 6001
Art Therapy Fieldwork II
A tutorial offering group supervision for students in intermediate and
advanced stages of clinical internships. Students spend from twelve
to twenty-four hours per week advancing their clinical skills in treatment
and assessment, with individuals and groups. A focused awareness of
each students personal and cultural bias is developed; ethical
and legal issues of art therapy practice are emphasized. This class
builds on the skills acquired in Fieldwork I and furthers the
students understanding of the therapeutic relationship which involves
the client, their art, and the therapist. Prerequisite: ARTTHER 6000
ARTTHER 6005
Art Therapy Studio
This course assists in consolidating the professional identity of the
art therapy student. Students work on their own art in a studio environment,
facilitated by an art therapy instructor. Explorations of the boundaries
of artist as therapist and therapist as artist will be discussed in
both the professional and personal realms. This studio course will engage
in critiques specific to the discourse of art in art therapy and the
boundaries which overlap between personal expression and public displays
of art. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take
this class.

Art Therapy Seminar:
Cultural Dimensions
Students form an ongoing discussion group which reviews literature from
the disciplines of psychiatry, psychology, art, and art therapy. Topics
covered in this course address a broad range of cultures, populations,
settings, and approaches. Books and articles are discussed, with a focus
on the interface between the theory and the practice of art as therapy.
Critical analysis of both historic and contemporary professional writings
is emphasized. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to
take this class.
ARTTHER 6010
Graduate Thesis I: Art Therapy
The focus of the course will be the development of the students
writing skills to facilitate ease and enjoyment of thesis writing. Writing
will occur in class as well as in homework assignments, with the goal
of bringing out each students individual voice. Students learn
library research methods, develop a topic, and gather materials for
a final thesis. Both visual and written material may be included in
this thesis, which is supervised by an adviser from the art therapy
faculty. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take
this class.
ARTTHER 6011
Graduate Thesis II: Art Therapy
This course continues the thesis-writing process in which the final
components of the body of the paper, discussion, and conclusion are
created. The course will cover preparing, planning, and producing a
thesis that provides a point of view and documentation of original ideas
in art therapy. Students can utilize a variety of descriptive approaches
in writing their theses (e.g., narrative, case study, traditional research,
ethnographic). In addition to finishing the thesis in written form,
each student is required to do a formal presentation of their thesis
material. There are creative opportunities for traditional and nontraditional
forms of presentation. Both visual and written material may be included
in this thesis, which is supervised by an adviser from the art therapy
faculty.
