ARTTHER 5001
Seminar: Materials Workshop
This course focuses on the exploration of art materials used in the
context of art therapy. A variety of responses to materials (personal,
cultural, symbolic, kinesthetic, etc.) and processes will be investigated
through experiential learning. Students gain a better understanding
of traditional approaches to materials used in art therapy as well as
nontraditional materials that can promote and inspire the creative process.
You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5002
Psychopathology
This course presents the central concepts of contemporary mental health
diagnosis (DSM IV). Emphasis is placed on etiology, terminology, and
symptom profiles. This material provides a conceptual foundation shared
by a variety of medical and mental health practitioners. Taught at Rush
Medical College, Department of Psychiatry. You must be a Masters of
Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5003
Art Therapy Seminar: History and Theory Perspectives
This course introduces the graduate student in art therapy to the fields
historical and theoretical aspects. The semester will begin with investigations
of the creative process and historical events (e.g., outsider
art, art education, the history of mental health care) that laid
the groundwork for what would develop into the field of art therapy.
Early pioneers of the profession will be covered along with essays by
contemporary practitioners on current theoretical perspectives on the
use of art in psychotherapy and counseling. You must be a Masters of
Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.

Art Therapy Seminar: Assessment
In this course the student will explore various forms of assessment
including both formal standardized instruments and informal approaches.
Particular emphasis will be placed on concepts of individual and group
assessment in art therapy as well as neighboring fields of psychology
and counseling. The student will develop a greater understanding of
the potential an artwork has to reflect artists developmental,
emotional, psychological, cognitive, spiritual, and cultural state at
the time it was made. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student
to take this class.

Art Therapy Seminar: Research
In this course the student will explore the theories, principles, methods,
and techniques used for conducting research in art therapy. Various
models of qualitative and quantitative research from art therapy and
related fields will be presented and discussed. You must be a Masters
of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5010
Human Growth and Development
This mini-course exposes students to the technique and value of taking
thorough developmental histories on patients before undertaking therapy.
The instructor models good history-taking by interviewing several real
patients during class meeting time, and guides the class toward sound
developmental formulations about the patients chief complaints,
self-identity, and social experience. The emphasis will be on interdisciplinary
approaches to conceptualizations of development, i.e., integrated psychological,
interpersonal, generational, and physiological approaches. Students
also examine the implications of stage theories of the human
growth cycle for psychotherapy practice. You must be a Masters of Art
in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5011
Lifestyle and Career Development
This mini-course considers how self-identity, talents, and ambitions
interact to generate occupational choices, career patterns, and workplace
values. The instructor will take educational and occupational histories
of several real patients during class meeting time, including one person
at the completion of his/her career and another just beginning to define
his/her career path. In addition, traditional career counseling techniques
and instruments for evaluating interests and helping a person define
occupational strengths and weaknesses are covered. You must be a Masters
of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5012
Substance Use
This mini-course begins with an examination of normative drinking and
drug use in young adulthood, with special attention paid to the use
patterns of young health professionals. Data on longitudinal patterns
of alcohol and drug use through high school, college, and graduate school
is analyzed and discussed, as it may or may not apply to the students
peers. Next, the quantitative relationships pertaining to the following
dimensions of substance use is examined and discussed: frequency and
quantity of use, peer norms for use levels, diagnosis of abuse or dependence,
and objective work impairment. Finally, the instructor provides students
with fundamental assessment and intervention skills for clinical work
with abusing or dependent patients. You must be a Masters of Art in
Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5014
Child Art Therapy
This course investigates child development and art therapy through a
study of major theorists. Issues specific to this age group are addressed
including the impact of family dynamics and diverse cultures on the
treatment of the child. Interventions through appropriate media choice
for each age level and adaptations for children with special needs are
covered. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take
this class.
ARTTHER 5016
Adolescent Art Therapy
This course focuses on the use of art therapy with adolescents entering
young adulthood. A variety of developmental perspectives are presented
in addition to contributions by art therapists specializing in adolescent
art therapy. The effect of family, diverse cultures, and the demands
of contemporary society on the adolescent are presented as the backdrop
to this course. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student
to take this class.
ARTTHER 5018
Family Art Therapy
This course focuses on the expression of family dynamics through art
in contemporary society. The definition of family is explored
from traditional, multicultural, single parent, and alternative parenting
perspectives. A variety of theoretical approaches including narrative,
feminist, strategic, structural, etc. will be presented. Experiential
and video components complement theoretical learning. You must be a
Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.
ARTTHER 5019
Art Therapy Seminar: Groups
This course provides students with a basic understanding of group dynamics
and its application for a variety of therapeutic goals using art. Students
are involved in an experience of group interaction. Lectures and discussions
focus on readings from the literature of both art and verbal group therapy.
Audio-visual material of groups in action are presented. Issues explored
include: techniques and training in group leadership; setting group
norms; issues around processing art; dealing with conflict; stages of
group development; and application with varied settings, cultures, and
populations. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to
take this class.
ARTTHER 5025
Counseling Techniques
This course will cover primarily verbal techniques that complement the
creative process in art therapy. Crisis and short term interventions,
the use of narrative, metaphor, imagery, and multicultural expression
in therapy will be emphasized. Journaling techniques will be introduced
for use with clients and for personal growth for students throughout
the course. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take
this class.
