You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.

ARTTHER 5009

ARTTHER 5010
Human Growth and Development

This mini-course exposes students to the technique and value of taking thorough developmental histories on patients before undertaking therapy. The instructor models good history-taking by interviewing several real patients during class meeting time, and guides the class toward sound developmental formulations about the patient’s chief complaints, self-identity, and social experience. The emphasis will be on interdisciplinary approaches to conceptualizations of development, i.e., integrated psychological, interpersonal, generational, and physiological approaches. Students also examine the implications of “stage” theories of the human growth cycle for psychotherapy practice. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.

ARTTHER 5011
Lifestyle and Career Development

This mini-course considers how self-identity, talents, and ambitions interact to generate occupational choices, career patterns, and workplace values. The instructor will take educational and occupational histories of several real patients during class meeting time, including one person at the completion of his/her career and another just beginning to define his/her career path. In addition, traditional career counseling techniques and instruments for evaluating interests and helping a person define occupational strengths and weaknesses are covered. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.

ARTTHER 5012
Substance Use

This mini-course begins with an examination of normative drinking and drug use in young adulthood, with special attention paid to the use patterns of young health professionals. Data on longitudinal patterns of alcohol and drug use through high school, college, and graduate school is analyzed and discussed, as it may or may not apply to the students’ peers. Next, the quantitative relationships pertaining to the following dimensions of substance use is examined and discussed: frequency and quantity of use, peer norms for use levels, diagnosis of abuse or dependence, and objective work impairment. Finally, the instructor provides students with fundamental assessment and intervention skills for clinical work with abusing or dependent patients. You must be a Masters of Art in Art Therapy student to take this class.

ARTTHER 5014
Child Art Therapy
