2000 Level Art and Technology Studies Course Descriptions

ARTTECH 2101
Fundamentals of Art With Technology I
This team-taught course is the first in a two-semester introductory sequence which is the prerequisite for most additional coursework in the art and technology department. Students are given a broad interdisciplinary grounding in the skills, concepts, and hands-on experiences they will need to engage the potentials of new technologies in art making. Every other week, a lecture and discussion group exposes students to concepts of electronic media, perception, inter-media composition, emerging venues, and other issues important to artists working with technologically-based media. Students will move to a new instructor/subject area every fourth week to gain hands-on experience with a variety of forms and techniques central to technologically-based art making.

ARTTECH 2102
Fundamentals of Art With Technology II
Both sections of this team-taught class extend the reach and depth of the basic skills acquired fall semester in the ATS 2102 Fundamentals of Art and Technology I. The faculty and facilities of both sections are available to students in each section; collaborative, exploratory projects crossing the boundaries of the sections are actively encouraged. Upon completing, participants will be equipped with the skills and concepts needed for the more specialized advanced courses in art and technology. Prerequisite: ARTTECH 2101.

Topic: Multimedia
This section focuses on multimedia in the broadest sense, integrating elements of digital sound treated as a meterial, alternative methods of image presentation, and programming for interactivity and activated environments. Students work individually and in small teams to develop projects exploiting the rich interconnections of media that are now possible through digital authoring techniques. Emphasis is on the experimental methods of working with familiar materials and programs.

Topic: Photonics
This section introduces students to the fundamentals of light as an art form. The three main areas of work are neon, white light and laser holography. Students experiment and create pieces in these three distinct forms in an open studio environment. Students are exposed to a wide set of technical skills and concepts.

ARTTECH 2112
Neon Techniques
This course examines neon techniques used in both traditional and current sign making and their application in creating artworks. Contemporary technical developments are explored.

ARTTECH 2120
Beginning Holography
In this introduction to the theory, tools, and techniques of three-dimensional imaging, students study the structure of light and the ways in which it can convey information, and familiarize themselves with the basic tool of holography, the laser. Students make several different styles of holograms, some viewable in laser light, and some in white light. Techniques involving spatial juxtaposition and montage are also explored. The focus is on developing a working knowledge of the medium from the perspective of its artistic possibilities.
