Course Descriptions
ARTHI 1001
Survey of Ancient to Modern Art and Architecture
This course surveys the development of Western art and architecture
from its ancient origins through the eighteenth century. Basic characteristics
and concepts of style, iconography, and technique are discussed in relation
to socioeconomic, intellectual, and cultural trends. Essential terms
are explained and major monuments studied in order to provide a working
verbal and visual vocabulary. The survey consists of a lecture (ARTHI
1001) and a discussion section (ARTHI 1101) both being required of all
first-year and incoming students who do not have its equivalent at either
a high school or college level. Concurrent enrollment in ARTHI 1101
required.
ARTHI 1002
Survey of Modern Art and Architecture: 18001980s
This course surveys developments in nineteenth and twentieth century
art and architecture. Particular emphasis is placed on theoretical and
critical issues, as well as the historical, intellectual, and socioeconomic
changes that are reflected or addressed in the works of artists and
architects. This survey consists of a lecture (ARTHI 1002) and a discussion
section (ARTHI 1201), both of which are required of all first-year and
incoming students who do not have its equivalent at either the high
school or college level. Note: ARTHI 1001 (or its equivalent) is recommended
as a prerequisite for ARTHI 1002. Concurrent enrollment in ARTHI 1201
required.

Ancient to Modern Art and Architecture Discussion Section
This discussion section is required in conjunction with ARTHI 1001.
Concurrent enrollment in ARTHI 1001 required.
ARTHI 1201
Survey of Modern Art and Architecture Discussion Section
This discussion section is required in conjunction with ARTHI 1002.
Concurrent enrollment in ARTHI 1002 required.
