Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE)Office: Sharp building, 4th floor annex
The MAAE’s innovative curriculum provides a foundation in educational theory and practice necessary for teaching and interpreting art, developing art-based curricula, and creating educational arts programming. Students work closely with a faculty adviser to design a course of study that reflects their own interests, experience, and goals. Core courses include survey of art education, social theory, and critical pedagogy, while electives explore areas such as museum education, new media and studio pedagogy, paradigms of cultural production, interdisciplinary and multicultural curriculum development, community-based arts programs, public art projects, interpretation and reception, and visual and cultural studies. Most courses include a practical component that requires students to develop and implement a curriculum. The MAAE program also requires fieldwork and/or an internship with one of the many distinguished cultural institutions in the Chicago area. Sites where students have worked recently include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Field Museum of Natural History, the Copernicus Center, Chicago’s Department on Aging, Little City Foundation, Lakeview High School, Video Machete, Marwen Foundation, and the DuSable Museum of African-American History. The program culminates in a master’s thesis that requires academic and field research, intellectual rigor, and creative experimentation. The thesis can take many forms from designing a curriculum guide to creating an interactive media work or an exhibition catalog, and faculty advisers mentor every student intensively throughout the process. While full-time (9-12 credits) students usually complete the program in three or four semesters, the department accepts a limited number of part-time students and offers evening classes in fall, spring, and summer terms. Successful applicants will be self-motivated and highly organized, eager to develop a strong theoretical basis for their work, and able to adapt their skills to changing audiences and contexts. Mid-career professionals are strongly encouraged to apply. Although most applicants have a bachelor’s degree in studio art, art education, art history, or other arts fields, the program welcomes candidates with bachelor’s degrees in other fields who can demonstrate accomplished art education experience in their current careers. Note: Students must complete the MAAE degree within four years. A minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed at the School. Up to 6 hours of transfer credit may be requested at the time of application and are subject to approval only at that time. See admissions and services for further details.
