The Loudest Muttering is Over: Documents from The Atlas Group Archive

In his presentations Walid Raad uses photographic slides, notebook pages, and videotape excerpts as historical artifacts attributed to imaginary anonymous sources or invented characters such as Dr. Fadl Fakhouri, a leading historian of Lebanese history, or Souheil Bachar, an ex-hostage. Raad's lecture-performances conjure up an alternate universe that mimics conventional formats of visual and textual representation such as the video documentary or the witness testimonial. Raad poses salient questions about the nature of individual and collective memories and their role in the formation of accepted historical narratives.

As a supplement to the "Social Seduction" exhibit at the Betty Rymer Gallery (Feb. 27-April 9) Andrew Bolton, curator of "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will discuss how designers and individuals have appropriated the skirt as a means of injecting novelty into male fashion, as a means of transgressing moral and social codes, and as a means of redefining an ideal masculinity.
