Just last week
I took a group of High School students to view the collection,
and needless to say, every student left with a specific enlightening
experience... the Roger Brown Study Collection is the only site
of its kind in which I and my fellow teachers can illustrate this
non-prejudiced approach to the world of things, the world of art...
in years to come, sensitive artists, students and educators...
will tell the same story."

Tours at the Roger Brown Study Collection
The Roger Brown Study Collection is a special collection of the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago. All visits are by advance appointment.
In addition to use by School of the Art Institute of Chicago faculty,
students, and staff, the RBSC is open to the public through Public Tours,
which are scheduled each semester, and Group Tours, which are scheduled
by appointment.
The Site
The Roger Brown Study Collection is located in Roger Brown's former
home and studio in an 1880s storefront building at 1926 North Halsted
Street.
First floor:
Brown's studio was located in the storefront on the first floor. The
studio is now used as an exhibition project space by SAIC's Exhibition
Studies interdisciplinary initiative. Guests to the RBSC view rotating
exhibits curated by School of the Art Institute of Chicago graduate
students and faculty. Brown's workshop was located in the rear of the
first floor. This area is now the Roger Brown Study Collection Archive
and orientation space.
Second floor:
Brown's residence and "Artists' Museum" collection is preserved as a
house museum and is installed, as Brown left it, throughout the entire
second floor. Back yard/garage: The back yard is an artful composition
of architecture and landscape created by Brown in the mid 90s, and is
an enjoyable place to gather in the spring, summer, and fall. The garage,
designed by Brown, is an extension of the RBSC, where Brown's 1967 Ford
Mustang and a collection of objects from his studio are on view. The
garage also houses the "museum shop", an ever-changing garage sale.
Public Tours
A Public Tour series is scheduled each semester (please call or e-mail
us for a current schedule). Public Tours are offered on weeknight evenings
and weekend afternoons. Tours are limited to10 or fewer guests, and
include a slide presentation and complete tour of the collection. Reservations
are accepted on a first come, first served basis. Public tour fees:
$15.00 general public, $12.00 SAIC/AIC affiliates, $8.00 students.
Group Tours
Group tours include an introductory slide presentation shown in the
first floor orientation space, and a complete tour of Brown's home and
collection, the preserved house museum on the second floor. Through
the slide presentation guests are introduced to Roger Brown's artistic
and architectural path, the context of the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago and the city's artistic environment in the 1960s and 70s,
and the relationship between Brown's collection and artistic practice.
Slide presentations can be customized to subjects of interest to particular
groups. Please reference the Group Tour Guidelines
if your are interested in setting up a group tour.
Logistics
The house museum component is a densely installed environment that fills
all rooms on the second floor, leaving little space for more than a
small number of people at one time. In order to protect the collection
and offer gratifying experiences of it, tour groups are limited to 10
or fewer guests in the collection at one time, accompanied by 2 RBSC
staff members. To accommodate tour group time restrictions, two groups
of 10 or fewer guests may tour the collection simultaneously. Groups
of more than 10 guests are divided into smaller groups. One group will
be shown a slide presentation downstairs, while one or two groups of
10 or fewer tour the collection upstairs, then the groups switch. Group
tours generally take 1 1/2 hours; the length of the tour can be adjusted
to accommodate your schedule.
Directions / Parking
The collection is located at 1926 N. Halsted Street, 1/2 block south
of Armitage Avenue on the west side of the street. Busses may let groups
off in front of the collection; the bus should be heading south on Halsted
St. Halsted Street is a busy street and groups need to unload quickly.
There is generally no bus parking on this section of Halsted Street;
busses need to wait for their group elsewhere. Please contact the RBSC
staff for more specific directions.
Access
The RBSC is located in a historic 1880s storefront building. Our facilities
are not presently fully accessible but we are actively working towards
removing barriers to accommodate people with disabilities. We are happy
to provide an extensive slide presentation, and show artwork and other
materials from our archive, to guests who are unable to go upstairs.
Please let us know if you have guests with special needs in advance
of your visit. Our wheelchair ramp is located on the south side of the
building. (A staff member will open the gate.)
