Mary Moran How do we memorialize a person? I ask myself that question today. Today, as I look over a site which at one time was supposed to be a memorial to the "founder of Chicago," Jean Baptiste Point DuSable. The site which is now covered with overgrowth of trees and wild grass. I look at it and I wonder how can we memorialize our city's founder with this patch of land? In the distance, I see the American flag swaying with the wind. American the beautiful. I visualize him standing on the other side of the river looking at me. I can see his face clearly, walking along the river, he beckons me to follow him. I follow him into the land of overgrowth. The underlying is smooth and the river is calm, but a slight breeze makes the trees wave as if they're saying hello. I continue to follow this great man as he points to the certain areas. I try to understand what he's trying to show me, but I get distracted by a duck swimming by. Were there any ducks swimming by in his day? A duck pond would be great. Children would enjoy that. Flowers. I smell flowers. Flowers would attract butterflies and butterflies are always beautiful. I start to feel tired from the walk so we sit down on the ground. Benches would be great right about now.
