19th Century of Western Music
In
romanticism, the composer focuses our attention on sound itself, and
frequently sound for the sake of sound, for the haunting, moody connotations
it evokes on the part of the listener. The formal elements are there but they
are frequently subordinated to the expressive.
Perhaps
the best way to describe it is to say that romanticism
requires a complete personal involvement.
By 1800, the whole of Europe was caught up in the new artistic
trend called romanticism.
