Session 4: July 12-17, 2009
(Studio Extension: July 20-24, 2009)
This intensive hands-on Institute will provide an exploration of digital media using the latest Apple computers for 2-D work as well as for digital sound and video. Projects will focus on the development of multi-media work for the web using text, images, sound, and video. A maximum of 28 participants are admitted into this session, with no more than seven participants to one instructor at any time. Students will spend the majority of their time in the lab where they are able to explore contemporary art practice through focused studio time augmented by discussion with today's contemporary new media artists.

Those selecting this session must have a basic working understanding of computers to successfully participate in this Institute. An appropriate level of knowledge could include basic experience with 2-D image manipulation software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, or Freehand, or any other comparable software.
Techniques we will introduce include basic HTML, web development tools such as Dreamweaver, GarageBand plus Director and Flash scripting and animation. While these techniques will be presented primarily within the context of developing work for the web, the strategies and techniques which will be covered are applicable to a wide range of electronic media-based work, ranging from print media to interactive installations. In addition, this session will provide an overview of technology's impact on the arts, and how technology is accelerating the expansion of the arts into a wide range of new directions. The session will include presentations by visiting artists who can present and discuss the most current developments in the field. |
