Suspension Exhibit 1926 EXHIBITION STUDIES SPACE
|
This exhibit will be suspended rather than tethered or hung; it will defy earthly laws of gravity and linear time, preferring the infinite cosmic suspension of planets and stars. Perhaps it is in the depths of the sea or in the stratum of the sky that one may experience suspension while on this planet, or by traveling metaphysically through suspended ideas in the mind's inner-space. This exhibit proposes the idea of suspension existing just as movement does, movement of time and suspension of time are both relative to the observer. The definition of suspension may be literal, figurative, or a combination of the two. Literal definitions may be something not touching the floor or ceiling, "a system of springs and shocks supporting a vehicle upon its undercarriage," or "a uniform dispersion of particles in a medium, either by mechanical agitation or by molecular forces." Figuratively, the definition may be an interruption, a pause, or a holding onto or back (of something). To combine literal and figurative definitions, one may invoke a 'suspension of disbelief' and hold back his/her ideas of logical reality in order to explore with an open mind. Interpretations of suspension are many, and allow for expression in a multitude of media, including traditional forms of painting, drawing, and sculpture as well as writing, technology, performance, and sound. One definition is "a technique in which a note of the first chord is held into the second chord, the dissonance created being resolved be moving a step lower in the third chord." Another is "a delay in the carrying out of a sentence of the making of a decision or judgment." In this way, the definition straddles opposing views of a break or an end to the previous continuum and the act of continuing something through from one point to the next. The proposed dates of the show will exist in an unusual time configuration: true to the theme of the exhibit, aspects of the show will be 'suspended' throughout the Fall Term. The original installation, from September 5 - September 14 is inclusive. This will be followed by the 'suspension' of the collective show and the 'suspension' of pieces placed in various locations within the gallery environs, determined by the configuration of the following exhibits. The pieces and the locations will change as space and weather permits, until all of the pieces from the original show have been 'suspended' in some shape or form through the Fall Season. The number of participants depends on what aspect(s) of the idea of suspension their concept addresses and the size of their work- one piece may include multiple interpretations of suspension. Proposals for the show may include: personal interpretation(s) of suspension, how the proposed piece will exist in the gallery space (installation configuration), and consideration of the 'extended viewing' of the piece in a different location in the gallery.
Deadline for proposals is July 15. |
