OTHER WORLDS
(INÉ SVETY)

2006, Marko Skop, Slovakia/Czech Republic, 78 min.

OTHER WORLDS emerges in the European tradition of the quirky film essay. Director Skop symbolically sets his film in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, at the exact dividing point between eastern and western Europe. Six local characters of diverse ethnicity and religion gather on a mountaintop for an unusual inquiry into what the future holds. In Slovak with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of the Slovak Film Institute. (BS)

RETURN OF THE STORKS
(NÁVRAT BOCIANOV)

2007, Martin Repka, Slovakia/Germany, Czech Republic, 100 min.
With Katharina Lorenz, Floria Stetter

Fired from her job, sassy flight attendant Vanda leaves home, boyfriend, and the whole big-city package for a timeout in her grandmother’s mountain village. But picturesque isn’t the half of it when the most available man around is a married con artist with a sideline in human trafficking across the border, and it seems that granny and her live-in lover are involved. RETURN OF THE STORKS was the Slovakian candidate for Oscar consideration. In Slovak and German with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of Stoked Film. (BS)
