THE INNER LIFE OF MARTIN FROST
2007, Paul Auster, Portugal/Spain/France/USA, 94 min.
With David Thewlis, Irène Jacob, Michael Imperioli
“An engaging diversion for literary-minded viewers.”--Andrew O’Hehir, salon.com
Like much of novelist-screenwriter-director Paul Auster’s work, this witty and haunting parable (filmed near Lisbon) tells a good story and also functions as a testament to the pleasures of storytelling. Novelist Martin Frost (Thewlis), exhausted after his latest book, rests up at a friend’s country home. Almost immediately, he gets an idea for a new story, and the next morning he finds a strange woman (Jacob) sleeping beside him. Does this mysterious muse have an existence independent from Martin’s story? Can the imaginary cross over into real world, and, if so, what are the consequences? In English. 35mm print courtesy of New Yorker Films. (MR)
