CHAOS
2006, Xawery Zulawski, Poland, 124 min.
With Maria Strzelecka, Marcin Brzozowski

Three brothers with different mothers and a nutcase father attempt a family relationship in this riotously anarchic tragicomedy that careens from loony slapstick to profound pathos. Ambitious uptight lawyer Slawek feigns holier-than-thou while playing hide-the-salami with his boss; would-be gangster Blondas is a thuggish coward; and freewheeling punk Niki deftly steals his pierced and dreadlocked beauty of a teen stepsister from the family nest. TIME TO DIE
(PORA UMIERAC)

2007, Dorota Kedzierzawska, Poland, 104 min.
With Danuta Szaflarska, Krzysztof Globisz

A somber title can’t dampen the playful spirit of this new feature by the Polish director best noted for her sensitive work with child actors (CROWS, NOTHING). TIME TO DIE was written especially for veteran actress Szaflarska, who brings to the role the marvelous craft and craftiness of her ninety years. An elderly woman content in the solitude of her rambling old house proves that a lady’s home is her castle when developers greedy for the property circle like vultures. In Polish with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of Kid Film. (BS)
