Closing Night Film!
KINGS
2007, Tom Collins, Ireland/UK, 88 min.
With Colm Meaney, Donal O’Kelly

The first major motion picture shot largely in Irish Gaelic, KINGS is adapted from Jimmy Murphy’s play The Kings of Kilburn Road. Five long-estranged boyhood friends meet in a London pub for a boozy tribute to a sixth, Jackie, recently dead. Bonded through blood and friendship when they left Ireland in the ‘70s, all have failed in life except for Joe (Meaney), whose success is built on betrayal. Tour-de-force performances by a remarkable crew of actors fluidly alternating Gaelic and English make this a gripping and eloquent look at the aftermath of dreams. In Irish Gaelic and English with English subtitles. Preview courtesy of Panorama Entertainment. 35mm. (BS)

Note: No free passes or blue tickets will be valid for the closing night screening.

Immediately following the screening, the audience is invited to a closing night reception hosted by Whole Foods Market.

THE TIGER’S TAIL
2006, John Boorman, Ireland, 107 min.
Brendan Gleeson, Kim Cattrall, Sinéad Cusack

“The director’s most appealing entry since THE GENERAL…The age-old premise of lookalikes who exchange lives feels fresh and springy here.”--Deborah Young, Variety
“Gleeson delivers a bravura performance.”--Amber Wilkinson, Eye for Film

A marvelously versatile Brendan Gleeson (THE GENERAL) pulls off two demanding roles in this fable set in a Dublin awash in luxuries in the wake of Ireland’s economic boom. Liam O’Leary (Gleeson) is a bullheaded self-made developer on the brink of his biggest triumph when a snarling homeless man who could be a figment of his imagination--or his twin brother--comes into his life. The slickest of identity thieves soon leaves the man who has it all on the outside looking in, but the dark secrets of family, money, and conscience are yet to be revealed. In English. TRUE NORTH
2006, Steve Hudson, Ireland/UK/Germany, 96 min.
With Peter Mullan, Martin Compston

“What looks to be a foolhardy decision to shoot on a relatively small boat on the high seas pays huge dividends in storm-set sequences of terrifying power.”--Eddie Cockrell, Variety

The son of a fishing trawler’s bankrupt captain conspires to deliver a clutch of illegal Chinese immigrants to a Scottish port in return for a boatload of cash. The miserable travelers packed into the dark hold are secret from all but Riley (Mullan), the brawling deckhand. A change of course and the forces of nature dash what was a simple plan and create escalating horror when good intentions clash with expediency. In English and Mandarin with English subtitles. Preview courtesy of Bankside Films. 35mm. (BS)
