FROZEN LAND
(PAHA MAA)
2005, Aku Louhimies, Finland, 127 min.
With Matleena Kuusniemi, Jasper Pääkkönen
“This brilliant tragicomedy plays like a Finnish version of MAGNOLIA or 21 GRAMS.”--Xan Brooks, The Guardian
Aku Louhimies, whose THE RESTLESS was a hit of our 2001 EU Film Festival, presents another incisive look at contemporary manners and mores. Based on the same Tolstoy story that inspired Bresson’s L’ARGENT, the film’s crisscrossing plotlines follow the fateful path of a forged banknote from a teenaged slacker to a pawnbroker to a vacuum salesman to a policewoman to a group of amateurs planning an electronic heist. In Finnish with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. (MR)
