THE ART OF CRYING
(KUNSTEN AT GRÆDE I KOR)
2006, Peter Schønau Fog, Denmark, 106 min.
With Jesper Asholt, Jannik Lorenzen
“Hysterically funny.”--Jason Anderson, Eye Weekly
“This refreshingly unconventional pic tackles its taboos with compassion, grace and wit.”--Jonathan Holland, Variety
Denmark’s edgy 2008 Oscar submission has been compared to Todd Solondz,
but director Fog’s explosive mixture of incest, dysfunction, and dark comedy contains less snark, more heart. Set in a rural Jutland community in the 1970s, the story is told through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy who acts as well-meaning accomplice to his abusive, mawkish father, one of the most memorable (and disturbingly convincing) screen monsters of recent years. In Danish with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of the Danish Arts Agency. (MR)

THE MONASTERY: MR. VIG AND THE NUN
2007, Pernille Rose Gronkjaer, Denmark, 84 min.
“Delightful... The award for the cinematic odd couple of 2007 goes to an 82-year-old virgin bachelor and a nun young enough to be his granddaughter.”--V.A. Musetto, New York Post
“A beautiful, mesmerizing wonder.”--Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
The eccentric Danish octogenarian Mr. Vig--part Gandalf, part GREY GARDENS--has a most unusual ambition: to turn his dilapidated castle into a Russian Orthodox monastery. But his self-aggrandizing dreams meet rude reality in the form of Sister Amvrosija, a no-nonsense young nun who is not afraid to look this gift horse in the mouth, and Mr. Vig soon finds that he is no longer king in his castle. This quirky character-study is one of the most endearingly offbeat documentaries of recent years. In Danish, English, and Russian with English subtitles. Preview courtesy of Koch Lorber Films. 35mm. PRAGUE
(PRAG)
2006, Ole Christian Madsen, 95 min.
With Mads Mikkelsen, Stine Stengade
“It touches on areas of breakdowns in communication as did the more ambitious BABEL, but it does so with a gentle warmth and hope in the face of adversity... a strangely beautiful and moving film.”--Chris Docker, Eye for Film
Dogme veteran Madsen (KIRA’S REASON) employs a more elegant style to examine a Danish couple whose marriage crumbles when they journey to Prague to claim the body of the husband’s long-estranged father. Miscommunication is the theme, mirrored in a series of dryly comic language mix-ups, and intense close-ups are the stylistic keynote, ideally suited to the chiseled, mobile features of the brilliant Mads Mikkelsen (AFTER THE WEDDING). In Danish, English, and Czech with English subtitles. 35mm widescreen print courtesy of the Danish Arts Agency. (MR)
