EX DRUMMER
2007, Koen Mortier, Belgium, 104 min.
With Dries Vanhegen, Sam Louwyck
“Every bit as gruesome, sexually explicit, violent and blackly comic as its source material…an aggressive and shocking feature debut.”--Colin Geddes, Toronto International Film Festival program
Living up (or down) to Belgium’s reputation for producing comedy/dramas steeped in surpassingly sick humor (à la MAN BITES DOG), nihilism, and titillating transgression, EX DRUMMER, based on a cult novel by Herman Brusselmans, is an in-your-face experience. Three drug-impaired low-lifes invite a successful novelist to join their Devo-derivative band “The Feminists,” little comprehending his godlike power to squash them like cockroaches. In Dutch and Flemish with English subtitles. Preview courtesy of Tartan Films USA and Wide Management. 35mm. (BS)
