THE END OF THE NEUBACHER PROJECT
2006, Marcus J. Carney, Austria/USA, 75 min.
A young filmmaker exploring his family history discovers Nazi connections that include high-ranking roles in the Third Reich and personal friendships with Hitler. Part exposé, part exorcism, Carney’s brave film lays out the painful facts, while his mother is seen burying the past in a flurry of good works and his aged grandmother recalls just how good the good old days were the aristocratic family. In English and Austrian with English subtitles. DigiBeta video courtesy of the director. (BS)

IMPORT EXPORT
2007 Ulrich Seidl, Austria, 135 min.
With Ekateryna Rak, Paul Hofmann
“Seidl loves to scandalize, and his shocking, pitch-black scenes respect no taboos.”--Dimitri Eipides, Toronto International Film Festival program
Austrian director Seidl (DOG DAYS; JESUS, YOU KNOW) takes another trademark dive into the dark side of seething humanity for parallel stories of soul-shaking power. Ukrainian nurse Olga (Rak) forgoes moonlighting as a sex worker in favor of “import” to Austria, where her job options are dirty in another sense. Paul, an out-of-work loser in Vienna, is “exported” to the bottom-feeding depths of Eastern Europe by way of a trucker job with his low-life stepfather. In German, Russian, and Slovak with English subtitles. Preview courtesy of Tartan Films USA and the Coproduction Office. 35mm. (BS)

IT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE
(KURZ DAVOR IST ES PASSIERT)
2006, Anja Salomonowitz, Austria, 72 min.
With Rainer Halbauer, Anna Sparer
Fiction blends with reality in one merged chronicle of the world’s secret trade in women. Through roles played by a real-life customs agent, a brothel bartender, a taxi driver, and other individuals whose livelihoods intersect with the sex trade, director Salomonowitz in an avant-garde treatment brings to life the tales of coercion, debt, and want that have forced women into sex slavery. In German with English subtitles. 35mm print courtesy of the Austrian Film Commission. (BS)
