Based on the 1891 short story “The American” by noted author Alexandros Papadiamantis, THE IMMIGRANT is a notable corrective to immigrant-saga cliches. The inhabitants of a Greek island prepare to welcome back a countryman who had immigrated to America. They imagine how his wealth will enrich their lives, but the reality turns out to be quite different. This rare and important film has not been seen since its brief initial run in 1965. No film print survives; we screen it in a Beta SP preservation copy.
Preceded by the short film ACHILLES (1965, Milly Yannakaki, 15 min.), a documentary portrait of a Greek worker living in France. Beta SP video. Both in Greek with English subtitles. (MR)
