Patrick Cazals in person!
SERGEI PARADJANOV, THE REBEL
2004, Patrick Cazals, France, 52 min.
ROUBEN MAMOULIAN: THE GOLDEN AGE OF BROADWAY AND HOLLYWOOD
2006, Patrick Cazals, France, 63 min.
Veteran documentarian Patrick Cazals presents portraits of two directors who were both born in Tbilisi, Georgia, but took very different career paths. Paradjanov’s rhapsodic celebrations of ethnic cultures, SHADOWS OF OUR FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS (1964) and SAYAT NOVA (1968), were hailed as masterpieces; his persecution by Soviet authorities aroused the outrage of the international arts community. Moving to Paris, London, and finally America, Mamoulian became famous as a stylish innovator in both theater (Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!) and movies (APPLAUSE, LOVE ME TONIGHT, BECKY SHARP). Presented in association with Cultural Services of the French Embassy. In English, French, and Armenian with English subtitles. Beta SP video. (MR)
Director Patrick Cazals will be present for audience discussion.
