Paradise Lost?
e-commerce and the Web

  Online exhibition: April 6 - May 31, 2001
Panel discussion: April 18, 4:30 p.m., Betty Rymer Gallery

  Theme:
The web is being increasingly shaped and directed by the development and acceptance of e-trading, e-commerce and other commercial activity. Art which makes use of the web as a venue must coexist and compete with an increasing variety of on-line public functions that the web provides and must function within an increasingly distracting virtual world of ad banners, on-line services, and other desktop (real and virtual) clutter. This juried exhibition features web-based art by faculty, students, staff, and SAIC alumni which challenges or subverts conventional notions of the web which are driven by e-commerce and other "practical" uses of on-line technology.
