The American vaudeville tradition sprang from a number of earlier types of variety entertainment, dating as far back as before the civil war. Increasing interest in this type of performance gave rise to one of the greatest traditions this country has ever seen. Traveling shows, minstrels, circuses and the like had always had an audience in the United States, but it was not until the establishment of venues specifically for the presentation of their talents in the late nineteenth century that vaudeville became widely recognized as a popular and nationally representative form of entertainment.
