Censorship Sells
One day before the opening of the BFA undergraduate exhibition, student Isaac Leung was informed that his work, "The Impossibility of Having Sex with 500 Men in a Month-I'm an Oriental Whore," had to be altered or taken down due to the fact that it included recognizable photographs of men partaking in Internet sex (photographs captured via webcam and streaming video), because Leung didn't secure their permission to use the images in a public exhibition. Leung had the option to either cover the faces of the photos or not participate in the exhibition. Leung chose the latter, and since then rumors of censorship have abounded. Considering that explicitly pornographic videos were shown as part of other students' work in the exhibition, censorship seems unlikely.
What Your Peers are Up To
An ensemble of artists, many of whom are students from SAIC, explore the concepts of gallery space and art coinciding with the entertainment value and energy of a nightclub in System_Project2002. Participant Melissa Urcan said that the event was "developed as a collaborative project-based thesis, [the project will] culminate in a four-day temporal ... held during Art Chicago (May 9-12) at the nightclub red nofive/Fifth Floor." Emphasis is on audience interaction; the four main projects are site specific and explore "the possibilities of time." Urcan stated, "As a collaborative effort this project will embody one full year of planning and development evolving from facets of art production and exhibition involving curatorial and administration organization, research, marketing and promotion planning as well as design."
