OZAN OZ ALBUM
By William Alba Pulley Press 2001

"This Book Belongs To __________."Former SAIC faculty member William Alba opens his book, An Oz Album, with what seems to be a reference to childhood, evoking Oz, evoking feelings about books and ownership, two themes he carries throughout this art/poetry book. On the facing page in tiny font it says, "please/take care this book,"reminding the reader that although the book is purchased, it still belongs somehow to the author. Alba also intersperses his own text with the text of other authors (who he credits in a puzzling centerfold), sometimes placing his text in black ink over the other text in gray, implying that these authors are omnipresent, a background to whatever he writes. Alba's Oz is Chicago, and through his adventures we see an intriguing mix of the public and private worlds of a Chicago resident. Below several poems, he includes the phone numbers of Chicago transportation, tourist, art and commerce spots, including Midway Airport, Montgomery Ward, Navy Pier and the Roger Brown House (now known as 1926.) He also includes an Art Jackson security alert (of SAIC fame), which also appears as a comment on racial profiling (most of the assailants are black or Asian), as well as on violence. Alba is very conscious of and kind to the reader. On the last page, after a "Fin"and "thank you"he gives us a digitalized CTA map, an invitation for us to take our own adventure. For more information, visit www.pulleypress.com. An Oz Album is now available on Amazon and locally at Quimby's (1854 W. North Ave.) for $20.
