COLLABORATORY

The exhibition #510: If the Shoe Fits...
(March 10 - April 14, 2006) actively promotes the notion of world citizenship among participating student viewers by providing an opportunity for cross-cultural awareness leading to a free exchange of conscientious expression in the classroom, in the gallery, and on-line. Fairy tales offer humanity a conscious portal to world citizenship. A single tale told the world over provides students with a vehicle for global linkage. The exhibition, corresponding website and the Collaboratory offers students the opportunity to see text and art transformed by alternative perspectives while appreciating distinct cultural interpretations of a seemingly familiar story. Art projects based on interpretations of tale type #510 will offer students the opportunity to track and celebrate the embedded cultural differences discovered in each variant; in essence the participants will try on and walk in another's shoes.

The purpose of Northwestern University's Collaboratory Nexus is to create a space for students to engage in a dialogue across distance. Participants will explore tale type #510 and the international artworks collaboratively created in classrooms around the globe for the exhibition #510: If the Shoe Fits... The Nexus provides a platform to facilitate communication between the student artists, gallery guests and those who view the art work on-line in this website. As with Correspondence Art, the students may form a long lasting "network" across distance.

Participants who use the #510: If the Shoe Fits… Nexus may contribute to local and distant discussions, create and share classroom projects, and/or design and complete collaborative projects. Using tale type #510, students will be able to develop a unique perspective while appreciating alternative points of view created and expressed by others. The opportunities are endless! Enjoy!!!!

Exhibition #510: If the Shoe Fits... Nexus

To prompt conversation in the classroom, currently the Nexus has the following two galleries:

1- Annotated Classic Fairy Tale, which provides a historical retrospective, depicting how artists have illustrated the #510 tale type (commonly known as Cinderella) in various publications.

2- Random exhibition shots of the exhibition #510: If the Shoe Fits... presenting #510 perspectives as developed by international artists.
