According to the legend of Chang E (Chahng-uh), during the Legendary Period, a terrible drought plagued the earth because of 10 suns burning in the sky. Chang E’s husband, Hou Yi, was an expert archer and shot down the nine extra suns. In honor of his heroism, the Jade Emperor awarded Hou Yi an elixir that would grant him eternal life, but Chang E stole the elixir and fled to the moon. In later centuries, Chang E was transformed in the Chinese imagination into a beautiful and virtuous woman celebrated as a lunar deity.
