Celebrating 140 years of operation, the historic hotel opened just 13 days prior to the Great Chicago Fire; it was unfortunately destroyed but rebuilt immediately afterwards. A wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his wife, Bertha, the Palmer House Hilton Hotel is truly the "house that love built." After her death, Bertha Palmer donated many of her original artworks to the Art Institute. The Palmer House Hilton Hotel was carefully restored in 2008, and the hotel lobby’s infamous gold ceiling and peacock Tiffany doors are only the beginning of the story.
