Letters, notes and memos to and from FBH and other Art Institute people relating to the donation and continuing maintenance of the Mary Reynolds Collection.
Letters of acceptance and thanks for the donation of the collection. Letters include references to a Hans Arp wood relief and a Joseph Cornell box given to the AIC by FBH; a copy of a brief memo to the AIC regarding Cornell by Marcel Duchamp; several references to the Mary Reynolds Collection catalogue. Later group of letter discuss issues concerning the preservation of the collection.

2.3 Additions to the Collection after gift of 1951
Correspondence between FBH, Lucien Goldschmidt, Hugh Edwards and others at the Art Institute regarding objects being considered as additions to the Mary Reynolds Collection and details concerning the establishment of a fund that would insure the proper care and housing of the collection. (Much of the Hugh Edwards correspondence with FBH regarding collection preservation coincides with, and can be found in, the catalogue correspondence.)
Some additions made during this time include: a subscription to the periodical Le Surréalisme, Meme, Proverbe NRs. 1-6, En avant Dada, eine Geschichte des Dadaismus, and Dada Almanac.

2.4 Gift to Vassar College
Letters regarding a donation made by FBH to Vassar in honor of Mary Reynolds on the occasion of the 50th reunion of the class of 1913; includes letters of appreciation from a few of Mary's classmates and some biographical notes about Mary written by FBH.

2.5 Design of Bookplate
Contains some of the items in the Watkins gift including: sketches for the bookplate by Marcel Duchamp, photostats and proofs of the bookplate. Includes correspondence between Duchamp and Hubachek and correspondence with the printer of the bookplate and with AIC Prints and Drawings Curator Carl O. Schniewind.
Letters discuss MD's design for a bookplate for the Mary Reynolds Collection at AIC; ink and paper are chosen and other details of the printing are planned. Also, a mention of Duchamp's gift of several 'Rotoreliefs' to the Hubachek family and reference to a meeting MD had with James Johnson Sweeny to facilitate FBH's donation of a group of Calders to the Guggenheim. |
