American artists have used food to both celebrate and critique their developing society; express ideas relating to politics, race, class, gender, and commerce; and investigate American identity. This workshop begins with a view of the exhibition Art and Appetite: American Painting, Culture, and Cuisine [4] to explore the art and culture of food and examine the many meanings and interpretations of eating in America. Participants will explore different strategies for decoding still life painting and learn about new trends in art that use food to foster community participation. This workshop takes an interdisciplinary approach and explores connections to select Common Core State Standards. This workshop is open to teachers of all grades and disciplines.
