Expressionism in art—distortion of formal elements such as color and shape to intensify mood—have been part of artistic tradition since ancient times in art across the globe. Twentieth-century European movements such as German Expressionism and Neo-Expressionism, rooted in the traditions of African and Ancient American art, among other influences, will be discussed in a lecture that will include works by artists such as El Greco, Van Gogh, and Pollock, and movements such as Performance and Video Art.
