The Art Institute of Chicago 111 South Michigan Avenue Chicago, Illinois
This fun family event was created by the Auxiliary Board in 1981 including former member, Maggie Daley, to draw families with children to the Art Institute to participate in a festive, culturally inspired holiday celebration and performing arts program in which children and their families learn more about the museum’s offerings.
Now in its 27th year, the Art Institute’s Holiday Treasure Hunt and Tea Party draws over 950 participants annually. When families arrive on Sunday afternoon, they receive a treasure hunt map and the initial clue that starts them on an expedition where they discover some of the museum’s most interesting works of art. As they follow the expedition and find the "treasures," volunteers await them to reveal fascinating stories behind the works of art and artists.
Children and their families then have the chance to create their own work of art by participating in a hands-on workshop, and afterwards, families gather for refreshments and to enjoy performances at a festive Tea Party.
