Nothing Is As It Appears: The Auxiliary Board's 40th Anniversary Masked Ball

October 12, 2013
Modern Wing
Tickets: $500

The Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute of Chicago hosted Nothing Is As It Appears, a masked soiree presented by Buccellati in honor of the board's 40th anniversary. More than 350 guests enjoyed an unexpected evening of ethereal environments and enchanting attire that celebrated its founding members, as well as the accomplishments and history of the oldest arts auxiliary board in the nation.

The experience began with cocktails at the Grand Staircase. Following the libations, guests were escorted downstairs to the museum’s beautiful and transformed Griffin Court for a dining experience full of mystery, music, and visual art. Throughout the evening, guests encountered unexpected juxtapositions and beautifully orchestrated chaos in keeping with Surrealist tradition. At the end of dinner, Buccellati presented one lucky guest, Angela Elbert, with a beautiful gold bracelet valued at $20,000. The evening was capped off with an exciting after-party in Terzo Piano, where guests danced the night away to the mixes of DJ Madrid.

In honor of this momentous anniversary, the Auxiliary Board matched up to $100,000 of the funds raised during the course of the evening. These funds went toward a special anniversary gift to the museum in connection with the exhibition Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926–1938.
