Katherine Grube, PhD candidate, New York University, explores the earliest applications of video in art in China, with a specific focus on two artworks from 1988 that illustrate the complex artistic responses to China’s mainstream art establishment, the avant-garde’s recuperation of a progressivist national project, and a newly emergent commercial televisual sphere in the late 1980s.
