>For the annual Trapp lecture on Japanese art, Joe Earle will describe the evolution of Japanese basketry from its origins in Chinese tea-drinking to its elevation as a major creative form during the first half of the 20th century, illustrating how three outstanding artists—Hayakawa Shōkosai III, Tanabe Chikuunsai I, and Iizuka Rōkansai—freed woven bamboo from its intricate, formalist origins and converted it into a subtle and poetic artistic medium.
Joe Earle is the senior consultant for the Japanese Art Department in Bonham’s, London. He was previously the chair of the Department of Asia, Oceania, and Africa and the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston; the vice-president of the Japan Society, New York; and the director of the Japan Society Gallery. Please contact Elyse Strand at aac@artic.edu to register.
