Hugh Edwards Memorial Lecture
The second annual Hugh Edwards Lecture in Photography, given by Lorna Simpson, honors the memory of Hugh Edwards, associate curator of photographs from 1958-1970.  A tribute to Edwards’ tremendous dedication and achievements during his time at the Art Institute, this annual lecture has been established to bring internationally renowned practitioners of our time to as broad an audience as possible. The lecture is open to the public and free.

Lorna Simpson
For nearly forty years, artist Lorna Simpson has been poetically asking questions about memory and representation in American culture. Deeply attracted to photography, Simpson began making documentary camera images around 1980, then progressed at the end of that decade to a series of quickly acclaimed photo-language pieces that deflated cultural stereotypes through punning phrases and pictured refusals—including the trope of turning her back on the viewer. Alternating between singular video projects and the serial production of photographs, collages, drawings, and paintings, Simpson has principally mined the black American vernacular found in songs and photography. Her work has most recently been on view in All the World’s Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and in a 2013 traveling survey exhibition that originated with the Jeu de Paume, Paris.

An installation of Simpson’s film Corridor (2003) will be on view in the exhibition Nothing Personal in the Modern Wing's Bucksbaum Gallery (188) through May 1.
