University of Michigan’s Donald Lopez is a leading scholar of Buddhism, particularly how the western world encountered, explored, and in some cases embraced it. Lopez comes to the Chicago Humanities Festival to remind us of the varieties of belief required by the Buddhist path, including rebirth and the infinite perfectibility of the human mind.

>Donald Lopez is the Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan, where he currently serves as chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures and as chair of the Michigan Society of Fellows. His recent books include The Scientific Buddha, From Stone to Flesh: A Short History of the Buddha, The Princeton Dictionary of Buddhism, The Lotus Sutra: A Biography, and Hyecho’s Journey: The World of Buddhism. In 2000 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
