May 3, 2013
$95 per member

Chicago is built on a rich and diverse foundation of immigrant communities, perhaps none more vibrant than our many Asian communities anchored in pockets throughout the city. Join Irving Birkner, instructor at the University of Chicago’s Graham School, on this exploration of a few of these ethnic groups. Begin with a visit to the Cambodian American Heritage Museum and Killing Fields Memorial to view the exhibition Remembering the Killing Fields and learn about the renewal of the local Cambodian culture and community. Continue to the Indo-American Heritage Museum for an introduction to the Indian American community and the ethnic neighborhood on Devon Avenue and a classical Indian dance performance. After lunch at Indian Garden, continue to the colorful Truc Lam Pagoda to learn about Chicago’s thriving community of Vietnamese Buddhists. Conclude with a visit to the Midwest Buddhist Temple and learn about Japanese Shin Buddhism, philosophy, and culture from Reverend Ron Miyamura.
