Bus Tour: Art, Architecture, and Gardens of Lake County

June 13, 2014

“And what is so rare as a day in June?” poet James Russell Lowell famously asked. Explore the question for yourself as we visit three exceptional sites in their spring glory with Barbara Geiger. Spend the morning at Mettawa Manor, the country estate of Donna LaPietra and Bill Kurtis. Take a guided tour of the meticulously designed and maintained formal gardens and explore the outdoor spaces around the main house. After lunch at 545 North, continue to the University of St. Mary of the Lake (Mundelein Seminary) for a private tour with assistant director and architectural historian Denis McNamara. Visit the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception (1925) and the McEssy Theological Resource Center (2004), as well as the Feehan Memorial Library (1929), where we will have the opportunity to view special artifacts from the library’s archives. End the day in Lake Forest with a visit to the private gardens of Frank Mariani, owner of Mariani Landscapes and an avid gardener who makes the most of his secluded property. Surrounded by forests and meadows, the gardens are an exceptional display of the historic European approach to beauty and utility combined.
