The water lily theme obsessed Monet in the last thirty years of his life. He had moved to the village of Giverny, on the Seine, west of Paris, in 1883. In 1893, he bought a plot of land adjacent to his house and built a pond for exotic water plants, decorating it with a Japanese-style bridge painted green. This painting is from the first of several series inspired by views of the water garden.
