Turning the Pages: Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770), Scherzi di fantasia, 1743/62

This rare album contains the frontispiece and 22 etchings of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo's Scherzi di Fantasia, as well as Saint Joseph and the Christ Child, forming one of nine known sets of the Scherzi di fantasia and the only one preserved in its original cover. Its enigmatic plates depict old magicians, an occasional woman (or perhaps sorceress), and a young soldier or hero, along with burning altars, skulls, globes, vases with serpents, and owls. The book is a promised gift to the Art Institute of Chicago from Anne Searle Bent.
